Plant-based eating has been on the rise for some time. It’s proven to have a wide variety of health benefits, better for the environment, and doesn’t contribute to the mass exploitation and killing of animals for food. Last year, a report backed by the United Nations even encouraged people to go plant-based to combat climate change. Now, with an ongoing, deadly and devastating pandemic, there is even more reason to urge people to eat plant-based and that’s exactly what doctors in the UK are doing.
COVID-19, like Ebola, the Zika virus, Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS), Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS), avian flu, and swine flu, is a zoonotic disease. This means it was transmitted to humans from animals. That doesn’t just happen. Humans have unfortunately brought this upon ourselves with wet markets, factory farms, and more.
Plant Based Health Professionals (PBHP) do not want to sweep this under the rug. With this pandemic bringing the world to its knees, it’s clear that things need to change.
Recently, Jane Goodall said: “We have brought this on ourselves because of our absolute disrespect for animals and the environment. Our disrespect for wild animals and our disrespect for farmed animals has created this situation where disease can spill over to infect human beings.”
PBHP agrees. According to Metro, Dr Shireen Kassam says “that another disease outbreak was inevitable if we do not move towards a plant-based diet.” She added: “The last 100 years has shown that pandemics will continue unless we change the way we eat and how our food is produced.”
Therefore, they urge people to go plant-based. It’s not only beneficial for your health, the environment, and the animals but it’s how we can prevent zoonotic diseases like this and reduce the threat of zoonotic diseases to public health.
