Deodorant is a product that people use every day, sometimes multiple times a day. TikTok user @askdebbieabouthair shares some illuminating facts about certain ingredients in deodorant that can potentially be harmful to your health.

Most deodorants and antiperspirants contain toxic chemicals like aluminum, parabens, propylene glycol, and Triclosan, just to name a few. Aluminum, in particular, has been linked to dementia, liver and kidney issues, dry skin, fatigue, learning disabilities, low immune system, brain fog, skin problems, ulcers, anemia, and behavioral problems. One public health statement revealed that in some cases, people exposed to high levels of aluminum may develop Alzheimer’s disease. However, other studies have not found this to be true. It’s clear that there is plenty of contradicting information, and additional research is required to prove the negative effects of aluminum on the body.

Parabens have also been known to disrupt your hormones and issues with your reproductive system, while propylene glycol can cause neurological issues, and Triclosan can do so much harm to your immune system. After hearing all of these possible side effects, are you ready to ditch your chemical-filled deodorant and switch to a more natural one?

@askdebbieabouthair shows us how to make our own all-natural and chemical-free deodorant at home! Not only is making your own more cost-effective, but you’ll know every ingredient that’s going into it and won’t have to worry about any of those harmful side effects.

You’ll start with 2 tbsp unrefined shea butter, 2 tbsp coconut oil, 1 1/2 tbsp arrowroot powder, 1 tsp baking soda, 1 1/2 tbsp Bentonite clay powder (for its antibacterial properties), 1 tbsp beeswax, and 10-15 drops of pure essential oil of your choice. Since beeswax isn’t vegan, you can use candelilla wax, which is a plant-based wax that will help thicken the mixture and absorb excess moisture. Add all of these into a double boiler if you have one, or place an oven-safe bowl on top of a pot of boiling water. Stir until everything boils down, and mix well. You can add this mixture into an old deodorant container or buy an empty one and pour the mixture inside. Refrigerate it for a while, and you’re done!
