The thought of missing meat is a huge reason more people don’t try a plant-based diet. If you follow the conventional wisdom, too many people would be too tempted by what meat used to give them, so back to the meat aisle they would go.
If you’re just going to quit, why even start?
Years ago, when plant-based trends were in their infancy, this argument seemed to hold some water. Indeed, a 2014 study found most people who tried going vegan went back to their carnivorous ways. With over half the US population expressing interest in a more plant-based diet, results like like that prove difficult to overlook.
However, a new study seems to contradict those findings. In a report conducted by Food Quality and Preference, researches found that their meat-eating subjects didn’t miss meat when it was reduced from their taco bowl and mostly replaced with legumes, and had the highest satisfaction when both beans and vegetables took the place of much of the meat in their taco bowls.
Perhaps the reason more people returned to eating meat in 2014 was because there simply wasn’t enough information or availability when it came to replacements. It’s hard cutting something out of your diet when you have no idea what to eat instead!
Luckily, things have changed now, and with more plant-based meat than ever. Not that going vegan is easy, especially for those raised on meat, but one thing is certain: Going vegan is a lot easier than in 2014.
