Scientists announced on April 29 that they have found the first effective treatment against the coronavirus, according to the Associated Press. An experimental drug can speed up recovery in patients infected with COVID-19.
The medication, remdesivir, will be made widely available soon according to government sources. The median recovery time for patients taking remdesivir was 11 days, compared to 15 days for the placebo group. It also showed a survival benefit, the mortality rate of the drug was 8%, versus 11.6% with a placebo drug.
“What it has proven is that a drug can block this virus,” said Dr. Anthony Fauci, the government’s head infectious-disease expert. “When you know a drug works, you have to let people in the placebo group know so they can take it. This will be the standard of care.”
Gilead Sciences, the company behind the drug, released it’s own results from the study and found that 50% of patients treated with the drug improved. The Food and Drug Administration is working with Gilead to make the drug available to patients, “as quickly as possible, as appropriate,” according to FDA senior advisor Michael Felberbaum.
Scientists around the world are also working on a coronavirus vaccine.

Scientists believe that the spread of COVID-19, or coronavirus, started at an exotic animal market in Wuhan, China. You can help stop the incidence of viruses like these by signing this petition to ban the wildlife trade.
