A new study from Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg (MLU) and the Leibniz Institute of Plant Biochemistry (IPB) found that cows can pass the hypoglycin A toxin through their milk. Cows that grazed in fields close to the sycamore maple had small amounts of the toxins in the milk.

Hypoclycin A can cause severe illness in humans. “The substance interferes with the body’s energy metabolism. One typical symptom in humans is very low blood sugar levels,” shared Professor Annette Zeyner from the Institute of Agricultural and Nutritional Sciences at MLU.

Researchers tested milk from cows at a northern Germany dairy farm. It’s not clear how much of the toxin the cows have to ingest to make the levels dangerous in their milk.

“We detected hypoglycin A only in two samples of raw milk from the one of the farms whose pasture contained a single maple tree,” says Zeyner. “These are low and widely varying concentrations. But considering that there was only one tree in the pasture and the sample came from a collection tank, it was surprising that we were able to detect anything at all.”

“Our study is the first to show that cows appear to ingest parts of the sycamore maple containing the toxin, which is then transferred to their milk. Many other questions arise from this finding,” explains Zeyner.

The dairy industry has also been exposed for its cruel and abusive practices. In 2019, dairy giant Fair Oaks Farm was exposed but continue operating. Dairy consumption has been linked to many health problems, including acne, hormonal imbalance, cancer, prostate cancer and has many side effects.
