A new study found that the saturated fats from meat may be more harmful than other food sources of saturated fats. The study was done with 114,000 participants in the UK, tracking their diet and health over the period of 9 years.
Researchers found that the risk of cardiovascular disease rose by 19% in those who increased their consumption of saturated fat from meat by 5%. Increased consumption of saturated fat from meat also raised the risk of heart disease by 21%.
Study author Dr. Rebecca Kelly from the University of Oxford, said, “The association seen between saturated fat and cardiovascular disease risk in observational studies has previously been unclear; our findings are important because they provide a possible explanation — that the relationship may vary depending on the food source. We found that saturated fat from meat may be associated with a higher risk than other food sources – in part because those consuming large amounts of meat also had a higher body mass index (BMI) than low consumers.”
Much of the research also indicated that body mass index had something to do with these increased risks. However, the research was not conclusive enough to make any claims just yet.
This study is just further proof of the health risks associated with consuming meat, especially large amounts of meat.
