When one imagines the celebrity lifestyle, it’s hard not to fantasize about adoring fans, lavish comfort, and travel to beautiful, far-away places. For many performers, though, life can be overwhelming, and anything but a fairy-tale. Hectic schedules, time apart from family, and an inconsistent sleep cycle lead celebrities to develop unhealthy coping habits just the same as the rest of us.
One victim of the high-pressure way of life was rapper, singer, and celebrity voice coach Will.i.am. In addition to his performing schedule, the 43 year-old is also a record producer and tech entrepreneur. Traveling was hard enough, but managing business along with his creative undertakings led Voice UK coach to suffer from poor sleep, and eventually to overeat.
His blood pressure and cholesterol began to creep up, and after a startling visit to the doctor’s office, the artist left convinced he had to make a change. To heal his symptoms, Will.i.am began a plant-based diet, and increased his nightly amount of sleep. Since following the diet, the rapper says his blood pressure has gone back to normal. Since receiving a clean bill of health, Will.i.am says his whole life is changed for the better.
“I lost 20 lbs. My cholesterol came down, my high blood pressure came down.” He said in an interview with Arianna Huffington, “My stress levels came down naturally. I have more energy.” He continued, “My sleep regimen is awesome.”
We’re all happy for Will.i.am, who’s going to have a much longer, healthier life because of his new plant-based diet. Singers and celebrities might have more pressure on them due to their fame, but they also have more voice. Like Will.i.am, other artists and celebs have proudly claimed their adherence to a plant-based diet, proving it’s not uncool to care about animals, the environment, nutrition and the like. As more and more celebrities open up about their most personal struggles, they should have the chance to inspire us with their personal triumphs as well. And if it makes the greener, so much the better.
