In four months, over 100,000 Americans have died from the coronavirus. Since the first known virus-related death in early February, the virus has swept through all fifty states causing widespread economic and human devastation.
Since that time, approximately 900 people a day have died from the coronavirus. According to CNN, the total deaths from coronavirus by this time is almost double the Americans lost during the Vietnam War. And the virus is still incredibly prevalent, even as states start to reopen.
As of May 27, Johns Hopkins reported 100,411 deaths from the coronavirus. But officials still disagree on how to count deaths and surmise that many victims who died at their homes might not have been tested and therefore not counted in the official tallies.
Presumptive Democratic presential nominee, former Vice President Joe Biden, tweeted a message of support to families of those that have died, “There are moments in our history so grim, so heart-rending, that they’re forever fixed in each of our hearts as shared grief. Today is one of those moments. To those hurting, I’m so sorry for your loss. The nation grieves with you.”
Health experts are still urging Americans to wear masks and follow social distancing guidelines. Dr. Anthony Fauci, the nation’s leading infectious disease expert, is urging Americans to continue hygiene practices including hand washing and wearing masks to help prevent the spread.
Scientists believe that the spread of COVID-19, or coronavirus, started at an exotic animal market in Wuhan, China. You can help stop the incidence of viruses like these by signing this petition to ban the wildlife trade.
