Dr. Anthony Fauci, the country’s leading infectious disease expert, urged Americans to continue to wear masks in public to help prevent the spread of coronavirus. This request is at odds with President Trump’s hesitancy to wear a mask and repeated declines to wear a mask in public.

“I want to protect myself and protect others, and also because I want to make it be a symbol for people to see that that’s the kind of thing you should be doing,” Fauci told CNN, “I wear it for the reason that I believe that it is effective. It’s not 100 percent effective. It’s sort of respect for another person and to have that other person respect you. You wear a mask, they wear a mask, you protect each other.”

The CDC has also urged Americans to wear masks to protect themselves. The CDC’s recent guidance advises the public to cover their mouth and noses with cloth masks or face coverings when they are in public areas and are unable to keep a six-foot distance from others. The coronavirus has killed almost 100,000 people in the United States and has infected over 6 million people.
