As of May 13, 36 million people have filed for unemployment in the last eight weeks. The government’s reported numbers for unemployment showed an increase of over 6 million from the week before. Powell said the United States’ economic challenges are “without modern precedent.”

The government has spent over $100 billion on unemployment benefits in 2020.
