According to the bill, the options must be nutritionally equivalent and be listed on all menus and written materials. For the bill, plant-based means no animal products or by-products. The bill was sponsored by the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM). Plant-based diets have been shown to reduce heart disease, diabetes and cancer. The New York State Department of Health released figures that 40% of deaths in New York State are caused by heart disease and that 1.7 million state residents suffer from diabetes.
Susan Levin, M.S., R.D., director of nutrition education for the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, said of the bill in a PCRM press release, “By making plant-based meals the law in hospitals, Gov. Andrew Cuomo has put New York on the forefront of a growing movement to ensure that hospitals provide patients healthy, plant-based meals to fight heart disease, diabetes, and obesity.”
The Washington D.C. council introduced a similar bill earlier this year. And California has passed similar plant-based legislation. California hospitals with plant-based meals in place reported food cost savings of up to $5000.
