It’s flu season! From here on out, we’ll all be eating as much vitamin C as we can to steer clear of the dreaded illness. This also means that there will be a dramatic increase in the purchase of soap products. Why? Besides getting yourself the flu shot, the two best ways to avoid getting the flu are by covering your mouth and washing your hands.

For the first, you just need a hand, but what if that hand of yours has the flu virus on it? Well, that’s why cleaning your hands with soap is essential. Soap can’t kill the flu virus, but it will dislodge it from your skin, meaning it can’t make its way into your mouth.

Alright, you’re at the drug store or on your computer looking for that perfect soap product to get you through the winter. Besides price point, have you ever thought about choosing a zero-waste, plastic-free soap?

Humans already create an absorbent amount of plastic pollution that clogs up our oceans. How much you ask? As of 2016, “a global population of more than 7 billion people produced over 320 million tons of plastic,” which is “set to double by 2034.” Each and every day — think about today, as your head hits the pillow to sleep — “approximately 8 million pieces of plastic pollution find their way into our oceans.” How much does that equal out to? Taking a highly accurate scientific estimate and there may “now be around 5.25 trillion macros and microplastic pieces floating in the open ocean … weighing up to 269,000 tonnes,” which makes up around “60 to 90% of all marine debris.”

Okay, that’s A LOT of plastic pollution.

During the season that skyrockets the purchasing of soap, why not take this opportunity to keep yourself safe and flu-free, as well as make a small difference in that plastic pollution dent?

Kathryn Zacarias says “I’ve been looking for a natural, sulfate-free shampoo product for a while. I heard about shampoo bars and was excited to give them a try in an effort to reduce my waste (shampoo bottles). I’ve had my bar for about 4 days and so far I love it! I have very fine hair and most products weigh my hair down and rob me of volume. This bar has given my hair so much volume! It does make my hair feel different from traditional shampoo, but it’s nothing I’m opposed to. I read a few posts from others saying the bar made their hair oily, but that’s not the case for me. I was a little hesitant to purchase because most products do make my fine hair oily. I’m really happy I made the switch and highly recommend this product to others looking for a more natural hair care product!”
