PUMA has launched an environmental initiative to help curb plastic pollution. Working with group First Mile, the athletic apparel company has created pants, jacket, shorts and sportswear made with 83 to 100% recycled plastic yarn. The collection is part of PUMA’s broader sustainability commitment.

First Mile works with communities in Taiwan, Honduras, and Haiti to collect plastic bottles. Their system creates jobs while reducing plastic pollution. The bottles are then turned into yarn and used by companies including PUMA in the development of new products.

According to Stefan Seidel, head of corporate sustainability at PUMA, “Even though one of the key benefits of this partnership is social impact, the PUMA and First Mile program have diverted over 40 tonnes of plastic waste from landfills and oceans, just for the products made for 2020. This roughly translates into 1,980,286 plastic bottles being reused. The pieces from this co-branded training collection range from shoes, tees, shorts, pants and jackets—all the apparel is made of at least 83% to even 100% from the more sustainable yarn sourced from First Mile.”

The collection is now available in select retailers, on PUMA.com and in PUMA stores around the world. Aerie also recently released a collection made up of recycled plastic materials.
