We know the transition from the summer heat to the chilly fall weather can take a toll on our skin. What’s a Green Monster to do? Forget the store-bought lotion and look to pumpkin! The end of autumn is the perfect time to take advantage of pumpkin’s amazing skin care benefits. To celebrate, why not have a pumpkin-themed, spa-at-home party this fall season and indulge?
According to the International Dermal Institute for Skin Care Therapy, pumpkins offer the following benefits to our skin:
- Help promote cell “turnover” or regrowth
- Smoothens skin
- Brightens skin
- Adds a dose of acne fighting zinc
- High in fatty acids and vitamin E
Whether they’re a puree or an oil, pumpkin-based products can help most skin types! How awesome is that?! Read on to see a few ideas for incorporating pumpkin into your fall skin care routine.
1. Exfoliate With Pumpkin Spice Body Scrub
Body scrubs are great exfoliants! They help slew off dry, dull skin and renew a natural glow. Remember to moisturize after any scrub or add in a few teaspoons of rich plant oil to your recipe.
Pumpkin Spice Body Scrub
- 1 cup sugar
- 1 teaspoon nutmeg
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1/4 cup organic canned pumpkin (or homemade pumpkin puree)
- Mix sugar, nutmeg, and cinnamon together. Mix with pumpkin. Put on skin, scrub in circular motion, and rinse. All smooth and clean!
2. Whip Up Homemade Pumpkin Puree Moisturizers
First, just note that moisturizers as fresh as this need to be made in small or shareable batches because they will get moldy. They should be stored in the fridge, too.
Pumpkin Body Moisturizer
- 1/2 cup canned pumpkin
- 1/2 cup coconut oil
- 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
Store in the fridge and use just like regular moisturizer!
3. Throw Pumpkin Flesh Right On Your Face
You can just toss some pumpkin puree right onto your skin and leave it be for several minutes. Wash with warm, clean water.
Have a little more time? Check out this flexible recipe ingredient list. As with most masks, simply toss ingredients together and store in the fridge.
Here are the suggested skin-boosting ingredients:
- 2 tablespoons of canned pumpkin (puréed)
- 1 tablespoon of soy yogurt or ¼ teaspoon of soy milk
Optional additional ingredients:
- ½ teaspoon of brown sugar
- ¼ teaspoon cranberry juice or
- ½ teaspoon oatmeal
Sounds delicious – and you could actually taste this if you couldn’t stand just smelling it on your face!
4. Pucker up to Pumpkin With DIY Lip Balm
Nowadays, there are more lip balm recipes online than natural options in stores. We recommend you start making your own, especially if you’re the type of person who finds themselves reaching for lip balm once the cold weather hits! Lips balms are super easy to make, with only a few essential ingredients needed like vegan wax, plant oils and flavors. Now, all you have to do is find some pumpkin pie or regular pumpkin natural flavoring and add into any base recipe you like. I recommend sticking with thick salves and balms during the colder months, rather than glosses.
5. Bathe With Pumpkin Oil
Pumpkin seeds can be made into an oil and added to nearly any one of your beauty care products! Purchase some pumpkin oil and ad a drop or two in your bath, moisturizer, hair conditioner, foot cream and more. Why? Well, the oil can help you retain moisture, maintain normal cell structure, and keep your skin looking and feeling healthy.
Sounds pretty great to us!
Pumpkins are awesome for more than outdoor autumn decor and festive pies. They contain a host of valuable skin care nutrients that promote health. However, always remember you’ll receive the most benefits in any skin care routine by using the freshest and highest of quality ingredients possible.
