The United States hit another grim milestone in the coronavirus pandemic on September 22. 200,000 Americans have now died from the virus, and worse? The pandemic shows no sign of slowing down.
Dr. Fauci predicted that 200,000 people could die from the virus back in March and he was right. In fact, the United States hit the milestone earlier than expected by many experts. Covid-19 has killed more people in the United States that Americans killed in battle during the previous five wars, back to the Korean War.
How do we stop the spread? “We have to stay strong and do the things that could decrease the spread,” said pediatrician Dr. Brett Giroir, the White House coronavirus task force’s testing czar. “Number 1: Wearing a mask when we can’t physically distance. Number 2: Avoiding crowds. Number 3: Hygiene. And with smart testing, we can flatten the curve and slow the spread. We do have a formula to reduce the deaths, reduce the cases. But we all have to be disciplined and diligent to make sure we obey that every single day,” Giroir said.
Dr. Fauci said on a CNN tv program of the milestone, “The idea of 200,000 deaths is really very sobering, and in some respects, stunning.” Fauci said that the country should turn to effective measures including mask-wearing and hand washing to stop the virus, “We do have within our capability — even before we get a vaccine, which we will get reasonably soon — we have the capability by doing things that we have been speaking about for so long, Sanjay, that could prevent the transmission, and by preventing transmission, ultimately preventing the morbidity and mortality that we see.”
