The United States’ handle on the coronavirus pandemic is not improving. Friday, October 23, and Saturday, October 24th was the first and second highest days of new Covid-19 cases reported since the pandemic began. Saturday’s case count was 83, 718, just 39 shy of Friday’s high. Health experts are concerned about increased case counts as we move into colder months.
“We easily will hit six-figure numbers in terms of the number of cases,” Michael Osterholm, director of the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy at the University of Minnesota, told CNN, “And the deaths are going to go up precipitously in the next three to four weeks, following usually new cases by about two to three weeks.” Experts think that people gathering indoors as the weather cools is to blame for the spike.
35 states have reported increases, including New Jersey and Florida. Illinois reported the highest number of cases since the pandemic began. Illinois Public Health Director Dr. Ngozi Ezike asked residents to wear masks and protect themselves, “As we see the numbers go up in the hospitals, people are bringing more beds, trying to prepare for the Covid units again. And these staff that went through all that pain to try to save as many people as they can are seeing history repeat itself,” she said. “We don’t have a vaccine yet, but we have a mask, and we’re asking people to use that, and I don’t know what else we can say.”
New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy who also reported the highest case count since May, tweeted, “This virus has not gone away simply because we are tired of it.”
