The city of Gunther, Texas, has declared a water emergency and is asking residents to severely reduce their water usage or else they might run out.
The city government sent a letter to residents last week saying that the city’s water storage tanks and unable to be refilled because of “excessive water consumption” and that the city is at risk of running out of water. The letter says that there are mechanical issues with the well that is partly caused by extreme heat.
The letter tells residents to “cease all outdoor watering until further notice” and to minimize or eliminate the use of “dishwashers, washing machines, use of showers and sink water, and any other nonessential water usage.”
“As communicated yesterday, water-wells are mechanical in nature and subject to failure when being run continuously. Wells are typically designed to run at 50-60% of the time. Due to extreme heat, drought conditions and water demand, these wells were running continuously which is why they continue to fail,” the letter states.
“Please continue all conservation efforts and do not waste water. Under no circumstances, until further notice, outdoor watering is NOT allowed. Limit your indoor water use to necessities. Refer to yesterday’s communication for specifics,” they tell residents.
Cities all over the world, from California to Vietnam, are facing droughts and climate crises. Millions of people are protesting all over the world. Read more about politics and climate change, including Manchin Restarts Talks about Climate and Social Spending Bill Previously Rejected and Climate Change Protests Take Over With Millions Continuing to Strike Across The Globe! Climate change is a top priority for young voters, and we need to care about the Green New Deal.
Climate change leads to extreme weather like droughts, floods, and fires. The single BEST thing you can do to save water is to stop eating meat and all animal products. Growing animals for livestock takes a massive amount of water. It takes nearly 660 gallons of water to just make one burger, which is equivalent to nearly two months of showering for the average person. On the other hand, it takes 1,000 gallons of water to make just one gallon of cow milk.
Studies have shown that eating more plant-based can add over a decade to your lifespan, it can save the world’s forests, it benefits the environment, and it is significantly better for your health! Nations around the world have urged people to eat more plant-based to curb climate change.
