Coronavirus cases are surging in highly populated states, including Florida, Texas, and California. In Texas, the governor paused reopening to respond to an increase in hospitalizations and cases of the coronavirus. 13 states this week reported an increase of coronavirus cases greater than 50%.

California reported 5,000 new cases on June 25 and 7,000 cases on June 24. Hospitalizations in the state reached an all-time high, with over 195,000 people testing positive for the coronavirus in California. Governor Newsom made masks a requirement for residents earlier in the week.

In Texas, Governor Greg Abbott announced that all phases of reopening were paused while the state works on the increase in cases. “The last thing we want to do as a state is go backwards and close down businesses. This temporary pause will help our state corral the spread until we can safely enter the next phase of opening our state for business,” Abbott said in the release. “I ask all Texans to do their part to slow the spread of Covid-19 by wearing a mask, washing their hands regularly, and socially distancing from others. The more that we all follow these guidelines, the safer our state will be and the more we can open up Texas for business.”

Dr. Peter Hotez, dean of the National School of Tropical Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine tweeted that Houston, Texas is on its way to disaster if the numbers keep climbing, “My observations if this trajectory persists: 1) Houston would become the worst affected city in the US, maybe rival what we’re seeing now in Brazil 2) The masks = good 1st step but simply won’t be enough 3) We would need to proceed to red alert.”

Similarly, Florida reported 5,000 new coronavirus cases. The state’s total case count is at 114,018.
