In 2019, Alabama’s governor Kay Ivey banned abortion in her state. It would only be permissible if the mother was at risk for her health, not in cases of rape. If a doctor chose to perform one, they could potentially go to prison for life. Luckily, a judge blocked the bill from going into effect.
Muhtar Kent, the CEO of Coca-Cola, who has advertised himself as a staunch feminist for many years, seemed to side with Governor Ivey on this issue. His company donated money to Alabama republican politicians Will Ainsworth and Greg Reed in late 2018, both of whom were part of the driving force behind the bill.
Besides that, Coca-Cola also sent over $40,000 to different politicians across 5 different states, all of whom had restrictions on abortion.
In an op-ed on Coca-Cola journey, which was republished on his LinkedIn page, Kent stated: ”I’ve always believed women should have every opportunity to learn, grow and succeed afforded to men. And while women have gained significant ground in recent decades, we still have a long way to go to achieve true gender equality.”
If that was the case, why did his company Support the efforts of politicians who wanted to restrict the rights of women?
