According to the most recent NYC CoC Homeless Populations and Subpopulations Report, 1 in every 106 New Yorkers are homeless. While many spend their nights in the city’s shelters, over 2,000 still sleep on the streets every night.
While these people suffer, NYC Mayor Eric Adams decided to sweep 239 encampments in under two weeks. He claims that he intends to work to preserve the dignity of homeless New Yorkers. “When I looked at some of those encampment sites…I saw people living in human waste,” Adams said in an interview on WNYC’s The Brian Lehrer Show. “Drug paraphernalia, no showers, no clean clothing. Living like that, that is not dignified.”

However, these sweeps are cruel and intimidate this vulnerable community with police clean-up crews. The issue of homelessness can only be solved through sustainable housing, not harsh enforcement. This treatment is inhumane and unproductive. Sign this petition to Tell New York City Mayor Eric Adams to stop his cruel homeless encampment sweeps!
