It is estimated that roughly 821 million people in the world are undernourished. There are many factors that contribute to this, including poverty, war, and famine. While famines are often associated with natural causes, like flooding or extreme cold, they are also often a result of war and other manmade crises.
The war in Yemen is going into its sixth year, already having caused over 230,000 deaths and brought around thirteen million people to the brink of starvation. The war started after a series of uprisings led President Ali Abdullah Saleh to hand over his power to Abdrabbuh Mansour Hadi. Taking advantage of many people’s disappointment with Hadi, a group called the Huthis took control over certain regions, which eventually forced Hadi to flee. In 2015, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates stepped in, which commenced the armed conflict that has been devastating Yemen ever since.
Yemen is in the midst of a famine that is only getting worse. The United States has been complicit with the situation in Yemen. It not only supports Saudi Arabia’s airstrikes on Yemen, but also has offered weapons, training, and intelligence.
Sign this petition to demand that the U.S. withdraw Support for Saudi Arabia, so Saudi leaders will be forced to seek a cease-fire and allow food as well as other basic necessities to reach civilians in Yemen.
