Leaving one’s home is never easy, but many people don’t have a choice. In the face of war, persecution, violence, natural disasters, and so many other kinds of situations, they must make the difficult, and often dangerous, journey to seek out a better life. When they make it out, they should be able to finally find some peace or safety. Unfortunately, reaching the destination almost always comes with a whole other set of difficulties.
In Glasgow, refugees are being kept at various inns and hotels during the pandemic. There have been reports of unsanitary conditions, inedible food, and a rapid spread of coronavirus among the refugees. For some refugees, this has not always been the case. Prior to being moved into these hotels, many of the refugees lived in shared flats where they could better maintain their distance from others to minimize the spread of COVID. Then, without any notice, they were evicted from their flats and given only twenty minutes to get ready to leave. Many didn’t even know where they were going or what was happening.
The cause of these terrible conditions is that the government placed a for-profit corporation, Mears Group, in charge of refugee services. This company has reportedly lied to and intimidated refugees, so that, fearing their case for seeking asylum will be affected, they don’t speak out. Mears Group obviously doesn’t care about treating people with compassion or humanity as long as they are making money. As a result of this inhumane treatment, refugees are speaking out to ask for change. Sign this petition to demand that Glasgow end its policy of for-profit refugee services! Remind them of their responsibility to provide true humanitarian sanctuary to asylum seekers!
