The UK government has put forth plans to combat the obesity crisis and improve mental health with a new bill, New Food Magazine reported. New measures include a ban on advertising “junk food” online and on TV. Additionally, UK restaurants will need to list calories in each meal.
The government is hoping to curb obesity in the country, alongside the accompanying healthcare costs. Research has shown that 28% of adults in England are obese.
Discussing the new bill, the British Heart Foundation’s (BHF) Chief Executive, Dr. Charmaine Griffiths, said: “These plans have the potential to transform care for the 7.6 million people living with heart and circulatory conditions in the UK today, and prevent more disease in the future. The pandemic has hit heart patients hard, with delays to care and cuts to vital medical research funding threatening to reverse decades of hard-earned progress in reducing death rates from heart disease and stroke unless we take bold action now.”
There is evidence that links food advertising and food preferred by kids.
