Unfortunately, the world is not a very peaceful or safe place for many individuals. From conflict to abuse to exploitation, there is so much cruelty inflicted on both humans and animals. While this can get disheartening and difficult to hear about, petitions are a great way to use your voice for good. Just by signing one, you are a part of helping those who are not treated fairly. You can even share them with your friends and acquaintances to increase your impact.

Through petitions, we can reach those in power and demand justice for others. They are valuable tools for making positive changes in the world. If you are looking for a way to help animals and humans, here are 10 petitions you should sign this week, including Hold Mining Corporations Accountable For Environmental Damage, Protect Bees in the US, and Demand Corporations Clean Up Their Plastic Waste.

We want to thank you for being the change you wish to see in the world and giving a voice to the voiceless.

1. Hold Mining Corporations Accountable For Environmental Damage

The Carmichael Coal Mine, formally know as Adani, has been destroying the environment and harming wildlife without adequately being held responsible. Located in central Queensland, Australia, Carmichael Coal Mine has been clearing potential Koala and endangered animal habitats without the wildlife spotter that they promised. They have failed to comply with numerous environmental codes and have received little punishment for their dangerous actions. Sign this petition to demand Environmental Minister Sussan Ley follow up on this environmental injustice and hold large mining corporations accountable for not following important environmental rules!

2. Protect Bees in the US

Bees are incredibly important for pollinating crops and flowering plants, but sadly, their populations have been declining at astonishing rates due colony collapse disorder, pesticides, Pollution, Climate change, and urbanization. Researchers estimate that as many as 25% of bee species may have been lost since the 1990s. Fortunately, the Netherlands is taking action. In many Dutch cities, you can now find things like “bee hotels,” “bee stops,” and “honey highways,” which give bees who are busy pollinating a place to rest and nest. Not only are they beautiful, but they’re also very effective. Sign this petition and ask the United States to get serious about protecting the bees and start creating bee stops!

3. Investigate Abusive Pet Grooming Business

MaryEli’s Lovely Pets has been accused multiple times of harming animals that they have groomed. Recently, a 5-month-old pup named Karma came home with blood was pouring out of her nose and fluid in her lungs. According to the veterinarians, who sadly had to euthanize her, “she had respiratory distress allegedly due to causes such as strangulation, near drowning, upper airway obstruction, prolonged seizure activity, or electrocution.” A 9-year-old pup named Sasha had her hip dislocated and blood on her mouth. A bird came home bloody and another animal died. This business, which has changed names multiple times, needs to be investigated for animal cruelty before any more animals get hurt! Sign this petition to demand MaryEli’s Lovely Pets is investigated immediately for animal abuse and shut down while the investigation goes on!

4. Tell the US to Protect Immigrant Victims of Domestic Violence

Domestic violence is a huge problem in this country. Escaping it can be incredibly difficult no matter what someone’s situation is, however, being undocumented can make things even more difficult. Due to “heightened risks as a result of factors like language, social isolation, lack of information or financial resources, cultural beliefs, or fear of deportation,” immigrant victims are far less likely to report this violence and find a way out. The 1994 Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) includes some avenues for immigrant victims to obtain citizenship “without the knowledge or involvement of the abuser.” However, because of language and financial barriers as well as a lack of transparency it may be difficult for these victims to be able to complete the complicated legal processes if they even know about this option. Fortunately, nonprofits, such as California’s Immigration Center for Women and Children (ICWC), work within communities to help immigrant adults and children in these situations. These types of nonprofits are incredibly important and deserve funding. VAWA is currently being reintroduced and now is the perfect time to amend the law to increase funding to community-based services for immigrant victims of domestic abuse! Sign this petition and ask that the United States Senate pass the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) Reauthorization Act of 2021 and include increased funding for programs serving victims of domestic abuse in immigrant communities!

5. Find Cat Killer Before Other Cats Are Harmed

On May 4, a cat Gosha named Gosha went missing. Two days later, an animal control officer went to check out reports of the heartbreaking sounds of a cat crying and wailing under a car. By the time he got there, it was too late. Gosha was under the car with his legs tightly duct-taped together. Much of his fur was missing and he had 11 BB gunshot wounds. Poor Gosha died a slow and painful death after being tortured by whoever did this. The culprit needs to be found before this happens to another animal.Sign this petition and ask that the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (MSPCA) Law Enforcement do everything in their power to find Gosha’s killer!

6. Re-List Gray Wolves as Endangered

Source: KTVB/YouTube

During his presidency, Trump made sure that grey wolves were taken off the Endangered Species List, and as a result, they have suffered tremendously due to hunters. In Idaho, only about 1,500 gray wolves remain. Sadly, despite this tiny number, lawmakers are trying to pass a measure that would allow hunters to kill more than 1,000 of the final wolves alive, which is more than 90% of their population. Even worse, the measure would allow hunters to kill these animals by almost any method they desire. Sign this petition to tell the Biden administration to immediately relist gray wolves as endangered under the Endangered Species Act and restore full protections to keep them alive and safe from cruel hunters!

7.  Find People Who Killed Young Gay Man in Iran

Recently a 20-year-old man, Ali Fazeli Monfared, or Alireza as his friends called him, was murdered for being gay. Because homosexuality is considered a mental illness in Iran, he applied for exemption from compulsory military service. He had been in touch with LGBTQ activists and was planning to leave. However, his family found out and beheaded him in an “honor killing.” Iran’s penal code explicitly criminalizes homosexual acts, with the potential for the death penalty as punishment. Given that legal reality and the protections in place for people who enact violence against the LGBTQIA community, it is critical that people are able to keep their identity a secret if they wish, for their own safety. The military exemption makes this impossible. Sign this petition to demand Iranian officials find and charge the people who killed Ali.

8. Support McDonald’s Workers Call For a Fair Wage

Source: Click On Detroit | Local 4 | WDIV/YouTube

Fast-food chains in the United States are currently unable to find enough workers due to their low wages. Not only do these individuals have to do challenging work for long hours, but they are also risking their lives during a pandemic. Despite this, they often don’t even make a livable wage and have to work multiple jobs in addition to their 40-hour workweek. That’s why striking workers are demanding $15 as the minimum wage. The Fight For $15 campaign has been going on for so long that now, $15 is actually far too low according to inflation and the rising costing of living expenses, especially housing. That’s why $15 really should be the minimum wage in the entire country. Sign this petition to Support the McDonald’s workers in 15 cities across the United States who are planning to strike starting May 19th until they are all paid at least $15 per hour.

9. Tell Cosmetic Companies to Go Fully Cruelty-Free

Source: Direct Action Everywhere – DxE/YouTube

Several companies, including Neutrogena and Dove, have claimed that they do not test their ingredients or products on animals. However, they sell in China, where all foreign cosmetics companies have been required to test their products on animals before selling them in China. Thus, these brands are not actually completely cruelty-free. Fortunately, in March 2021, the Chinese government announced that foreign cosmetics that are imported into the country will no longer be required to test on animals first to prove the products’ safety. Now it’s time for every animal-testing corporation to finally drop animal testing for good! No animal should be kept in a tiny cage and have painful tests performed on them. Animal testing is not only cruel, but completely unnecessary. Sign this petition to demand that Neutrogena, Aussie, Herbal Essences, and Dove go fully cruelty-free and stop testing its products on animals, now!

10. Demand Corporations Clean Up the Plastic Waste They Create

Source: ERP UK Ltd/YouTube

Plastic is destroying the planet. It’s trapping and choking animals, leaching chemicals into our food and water, and destroying once-beautiful landscapes. Even though corporations work hard to push plastic onto consumers and make money off harming the planet in doing so, they do not take responsibility for the plastic they produce. Instead, they try to push that responsibility onto consumers. The large corporations that create plastic need to be the ones who deal with it. They cannot keep harming our planet for profit without taking any responsibility for the damage that they cause. Fortunately, states across the U.S. — including California, Colorado, Maryland, New Hampshire, New York, Oregon, Vermont, and Washington state — are trying to pass bills known as “extended producer responsibility” laws to put the responsibility for the plastic waste that corporations create back onto the corporations themselves. Not only will these laws force them to take accountability and clean up our planet, but they will hopefully also push them to be more sustainable, too. Sign this petition to demand that U.S. state governments force plastic-producing corporations to pay for the costs they’ve inflicted on our environment! They made the mess. Now they should shoulder responsibility for cleaning it up.
