Amid the Jackson, Mississippi, water crisis, residents are facing huge water bills that they could never have imagined when they can’t even use the water.

Virginia Evans told CNN that in the last six months, her toilets won’t flush sometimes, and water comes out of her faucets at her home in Jackson. The water was brown, and there was little to no pressure. When she was mailed her water bill for nearly $4,000, she was shocked.
“It’s not fair for anyone, any resident in the city of Jackson,” Evans told CNN. “I don’t know what they need to do but they need to do something because no one should be paying this amount when you’re not even able to use the water.”
Other residents have been complaining about high water bills following the water crisis that left the city without clean drinking water. Although officials say that the revenues are necessary to fund the delivery of water services, this should not be something that falls on innocent residents.
Some residents have tried to get help with their water bills but haven’t had any luck. An agency told Evans that it needed more information, and she is still waiting to hear back. She thought that with the recent water crisis, the city would offer some grace.
Many say that Jackson, Mississippi, has become the newest Flint as they are suffering a water crisis due to racism. Many residents are frustrated and say that racism has set Jackson up for failure.

Everyone should have a right to clean drinking water. Climate change leads to extreme weather like droughts, floods, and fires. The single BEST thing you can do to fight climate change is to stop eating meat and all animal products. Growing animals for livestock takes a massive amount of water. It takes nearly 660 gallons of water to just make one burger, which is equivalent to nearly two months of showering for the average person. On the other hand, it takes 1,000 gallons of water to make just one gallon of cow milk.
Studies have shown that eating more plant-based can add over a decade to your lifespan, it can save the world’s forests, it benefits the environment, and it is significantly better for your health! Nations around the world have urged people to eat more plant-based to curb climate change.
