By December 6, 101,487 patients were in the hospital with coronavirus, according to the Covid Tracking Project. The record-setting number underscores the sizable pressure felt by hospitals around the country.

And health experts stress the fact that these numbers don’t include the potential surge coming from Thanksgiving gatherings and travel. “Our hospitals are already at the brink,” shared CNN medical analyst Dr. Leana Wen, a former Baltimore City health commissioner. “And they are just at the brink of becoming so overwhelmed that patients are going to get less than ideal care.”

Wen urged people to stay inside and avoid spreading the virus. “Because otherwise we have a catastrophe on our hands that’s worse than any of us can possibly imagine,” she said. The exponential growth of the virus has been the highest ever in December, with over a million cases reported the first five days.

By December 6, over 14.7 million cases have been confirmed in the United States and over 282,200 people have died from the coronavirus.
