A new coronavirus outbreak in Beijing is leading to strict lockdown measures and mass testing. The outbreak came from a wholesale food market, the largest in the city. China’s capital reported 36 new COVID-19 cases on June 15, which brings the total to 79.

It’s the first reported infection in two months, according to the government. The market where the infection was first located has been shut down. Chinese authorities are trying to prevent the virus from spreading further. Cases that can be traced to Beijing have already been reported in Lianing and Heibei provinces.

Vice Premier Sun Chunlan reportedly said in a cabinet meeting that the risk of the outbreak spreading was “very high,” due to Beijing’s density and mobile population. 11 residential compounds have been locked down in the city and residents will have daily temperature checks. Mass testing has also been rolled out in the city and authorities are in the process of tracking down the 30,000 residents that went to the market in the past few weeks.

The World Health Organization (WHO) confirmed Monday that over 100 cases had been reported in Beijing. Beijing had gone 56 days without an infection until this outbreak.
