Unfortunately, the world is not a very peaceful or safe place for many individuals. From conflict to abuse to exploitation, there is so much cruelty inflicted on both humans and animals. While this can get disheartening and difficult to hear about, petitions are a great way to use your voice for good. Just by signing one, you are a part of helping those who are not treated fairly. You can even share them with your friends and acquaintances to increase your impact.
Through petitions, we can reach those in power and demand justice for others. They are valuable tools for making positive changes in the world. If you are looking for a way to help animals and humans, here are 10 petitions you should sign this week, including disbarring a racist white couple who pointed guns at BLM protesters, ending gay conversion therapy, and banning steel-jaw leghold traps.
We want to thank you for being the change you wish to see in the world and giving a voice to the voiceless.
1. Help This Macaw Who Has Been Confined to a Cage for Over Twenty Years
Bee Gee, a blue and gold macaw kept at Connaughton’s of Tuam in Galway, Ireland for “display” purposes, has lived in a small, dirty cage with one dowel perch and no enrichment for over twenty years. His diet is unhealthy and his water, never clean. His beak is in bad condition and he is likely in need of medical attention. Parrots are highly intelligent and confining one to a cage, especially one which forbids flight and contains no toys or enrichment, is completely inhumane. Despite offers from their patrons, the shop’s management refuses to offer Bee Gee any improvements to his care or environment. The Galway SPCA is trying to help rehome this poor bird. Sign this petition to put pressure on the Department of Agriculture and Connaughton’s of Tuam, so that Bee Gee can be rescued and put in a proper home.
2. Disbar Racist White Couple Who Pointed Guns at BLM Protestors
Mark and Patricia McCloskey are both lawyers who recently pointed their guns at people who were on their way to a Black Lives Matter protest in Missouri. According to state and federal law, the couple’s actions are illegal and thus, they should be held accountable. Sign this petition to demand that the state of Missouri disbar them both now!
3. End Loophole that Allows Fishing of Endangered Species in Australia
In Australia, the EPBC Act protects animals listed as “vulnerable, endangered, or critically endangered” as “no take,” which makes it illegal to sell them or export them. However, other critically endangered species, eight in total, are merely classified as “conservation dependent.” Thus, fisheries are allowed to fish, slaughter, sell, and export them without any repercussions. These marine animals are vital to their ecosystems and the fishing industry is thereby causing irreparable damage to the environment and wildlife of Australia. Sign this petition to demand that Australia’s Environment Ministers reform the EPBC Act to close this loophole, by eliminating the category of “conservation dependent” and moving those species to “critically endangered.”
4. Save These Monkeys from Being Captured in the Philippines
The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) in the Philippines has received at least one application asking to capture wild long-tailed macaques for research purposes. The approval of this application could lead to a revival in farms breeding and exporting macaques for research, using newly trapped monkeys as a source. Capturing these animals can lead to injuries, emotional stress, disease, and even death in many cases. Sign this petition to make the Filipino government aware of international concern over the capture of native monkeys!
5. Ban Conversion Therapy
Conversion therapy is a type of therapy that aims to change someone’s sexual orientation or gender. Often times, it is children who are subjected to these horrible “treatments” by their unaccepting parents. The practice can cause feelings of self-hate, depression, and even provoke suicidal ideation, yet it is still legal in most U.S. states. Sign this petition to demand that these states ban conversion therapy now!
6. Stop Puppy Store From Opening in Connecticut
A pet store called Puppy Palace plans on opening soon in Farmington, CT. While they claim to source their puppies from “United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) licensed breeders”, this does not mean that the puppies are bred humanely. In Defense of Animals (IDA) reveals that a puppy mill with such licensing is still allowed legally to: confine dogs to small cages, deny them adequate exercise and socialization, keep them in extreme temperatures for up to 4 hours, and provide no regular veterinary care other than annual visits. Plus, there are already plenty of dogs in shelters that still need their forever homes. Sign this petition to show town officials that Farmington residents do not want the town supporting puppy mills!
7. End Grizzly Bear Hunting Permits in Alaska
Trophy hunting is a cruel and unnecessary sport, in which the only goal is to collect and display a murdered animal’s body parts. Donald Trump Jr. just bought the right to take part in one of these horrific events. His latest victim will be an innocent Alaskan Grizzly Bear. While conservation efforts have kept the population of these bears much higher in Alaska than other U.S. states, they still should not be trophy hunted. Sign this petition to tell the Alaska Department of Fish and Game to terminate all grizzly bear hunting permits, now and in the future.
8. Fire Cop Who Kicked his Dog
In Amarillo, Texas, a cop from the K9 unit was filmed kicking his own dog after being deployed to assist in apprehending a suspect for car theft. The Amarillo Police Department has separated the cop from his dog, but he continues to be on the force. Sign this petition to demand that the Amarillo Police Department relieve this officer of duty, so he doesn’t have the chance to use his power to take out his anger on any other innocent people or animals.
9. Ban Fur Trapping in the U.K.
Recently in the U.K., a hunter was caught on camera using a wooden bat to brutally beat a helpless fox and then crush it beneath his boot. The fox was caught in a snare trap, a notoriously inhumane method of wildlife capture. Fur farming in the United Kingdom has been illegal since 2000, but the trapping of wild animals for their pelts, including foxes, is still legal. Sign this petition to demand that Parliament pass a law banning all fur trapping in the UK!
10. Ban Steel-Jaw Leghold Traps in the U.S.
Steel-jaw leghold traps catch animals by their leg with spring-operated metal jaws. In their desperation to escape, the captured animal will sometimes bite off the limb that has been caught. Pets, birds, and other animals of rare species are often the unintended victims of these traps. These animals often suffer from various injuries and issues, which results in them needing to be euthanized. About 100 countries – excluding the United States, Canada and Russia – have banned these inhumane leghold traps. Sign this petition to demand that Congress pass legislation to ban steel-jaw leghold traps in the United States.
