Cases continue to rise around the country, with Oklahoma and Missouri reporting largest yet single day increases. Florida passed 100,000 total cases on June 21. The virus has become a political issue in the United States, as the White House has rolled back restrictions during working hours and governments push for economic improvements instead of social distancing and staying at home.
In places like Florida and Arizona, states with record high cases, government officials are not pushing residents to wear masks. During his campaign rally in Tulsa, President Trump told staff to slow down testing for the disease to stop finding new cases. His advisors say that he was joking. The CDC is reporting that the group with the largest rate of infections is 18-44-year-olds.
Without calling out the United States, the World Health Organization (WHO) urged countries not to make this a political issue. On June 22, the WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said, “We know the pandemic is so much more than a health crisis — it’s an economic crisis, a social crisis and in many countries a political crisis.”
By June 21, the world had reached almost 9 million cases and the biggest daily jump in global cases, with over 183,000 reported in a 24-hour period.
