Congress is still negotiating on another stimulus package to help ease the economic damage from the coronavirus. The $600 unemployment benefit ended on July 31 and Democrats and Republicans are still negotiating to see what the next round of stimulus will include.
The White House, as of August 5, was offering federal unemployment enhancement of $400 a week, down from the $600 previously given, eviction moratorium increased until December, and an additional $200 billion of state and local aid. Democrats are pushing for additional funds, including the $600 a week unemployment benefit. Republicans aren’t happy with the total price of the stimulus.
“The American people, in the end, need help, and wherever this thing settles between the President of the United States and his team that has to sign it into law, and the Democrat not-insignificant minority in the Senate and majority in the House is something I am prepared to support — even if I have some problems with certain parts of it,” McConnell told reporters.
President Trump signed an executive order on August 8, including $400 a week expanded federal unemployment benefits, but states have to pick up 25% of the benefit. The order also includes a payroll tax deferral and pauses student loan payments for an additional three months. The order doesn’t reinstate the previous moratorium on evictions.
