As the rate of daily coronavirus deaths is the highest its been since the spring in the United States, the country passed another grim coronavirus milestone. According to data from Johns Hopkins, the United States passed 150,000 deaths from the virus, with 150,034 reported on July 29.
The seven-day moving average went above 1,000 deaths on July 28, for the first time since June 2. Experts are pushing for action to help stem the pandemic. The rise of deaths was forecasted by experts a few weks ago as cases spiked in the South and West at the beginning of July. Actions like wearing masks, limiting gatherings and outdoor dining and closing bars are all steps to mitigate deaths in the United States, per Dr. Anthony Fauci.
“It’s not going to spontaneously come down,” Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said July 28 in a call with several governors about the pandemic. Association of American Medical Colleges president and CEO Dr. David Skorton said on July 29 that “Decisive, coordinated action is urgently needed to save lives, end the pandemic, restore America’s economy, and return our lives to normalcy,” and that deaths in the United States could reach “multiple hundreds of thousands.”
