According to a new poll by Gallup, young Republicans are significantly more concerned about the environment than older republicans.

Among Republicans aged 18-34, about 32 percent say they are worried “a great deal” about the quality of the environment, while 37 percent say that they are worried a “fair amount.”

However, those aged 35-54 are less worried, with only 18 percent saying they are worried “a great deal” and 34 percent saying they are worried a “fair amount.”

Republicans aged 55 and older were found even less likely to be worried, with 14 percent saying they are worried “a great deal.” 32 percent say they are worried a “fair amount.”

Worries about climate change are increasing, and according to Gallup, for the seventh year straight, the public concern in the US about the quality of the environment is near its two-decade high. 44 percent of Americans worry “a great deal” about it while the rest are divided fairly evenly with 27 percent for “a fair amount” and 28 percent for “only a little” or 28 percent for “not at all”.

“If increasing numbers of Republicans experience extreme weather, and younger generations continue to exhibit higher levels of environmental concerns, these partisans overall may become more likely to believe global warming is affecting the world and increase their worry about the environment,” Gallup researchers said.

The poll shows that 64 percent of Democrats worry a great deal about the environment, and 80 percent of Democrats in all age groups say that the effects of climate change and global warming are already here. On the opposite side, 44 percent of Republicans say the world is experiencing the effects of climate change.
