Maryland is now the home of the first completely electric fueling station for electric vehicles. A local business owner converted his station from gas-to-electric in September 2019. The business is a win for the environment.

Takoma Park, Maryland resident Depeswar Doley converted his business, RS Automotives, after urging from his daughter. After feeling pressure from oil and gas companies and her teaching on environmentalism in the United States, he took the plunge. The Electric Vehicle Institute and Maryland Energy administration provided a grant to help make the change possible.

Electric vehicle ownership continues to grow nationwide. Maryland has 20,700 registered vehicles, as well as a significant electric taxi fleet. The electric station can charge four vehicles at once and can charge a battery to 80% in 30 minutes. The town has two separate charging locations, but those are much smaller. Tesla has 1,600 charging stations for its customers across the United States.

With grants, dedication and environmentally minded daughter, Owner Doley said of the new business, “It’s good for the environment. I’m not doing this just to nickel and dime, thinking about how much money I’m going to make — no. I know this is a good cause, and this is something new. What I’m doing, maybe it will encourage other businesses owners and encourage the electric car business.” He has owned the business since 1997.

A Takoma Park public works manager first suggested the idea to Doley. The governor of Maryland is also pleased with the new business, calling it a reflection of the Maryland government’s commitment to the environment and renewable energy.
