On February 10, Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti signed an executive directive to improve the city’s Green New Deal. Called, “L.A.’s Green New Deal: Leading by Example,” it outlines the need to reduce emissions over the next decade.
In a statement, Garcetti said, “The science could not be clearer and the stakes could not be higher. We must act this decade to save the planet and create a more equitable, prosperous and healthy future for our children and grandchildren. There is literally no time to waste because what we do in the next 10 years will determine the health of our planet and whether there’s a job, a paycheck and a place for everyone in our economy.”
The Green New Deal includes multiple provisions including removing non-renewable energy from transportation, electricity, buildings and trash. Other directions for the city include: expand low-income and multi-family households clean energy, make City Hall zero waste by 2025, make all roofs “cool roofs,” promote walking and bicycling, upgrade lightrail and buses to improve transit speeds, and mandate new construction disclose a path to carbon neutrality.
Garcetti said that the city has reduced greenhouse gas emissions by 11% in a year. Garcetti is part of a coalition of mayors working toward a greener future. The group recently met to work out a plan for sustainable cities at the C40 Summit.
