The IOC decided to delay choosing a host for the 2030 Games for at least 13 months while they scramble to figure out how to hold the February 2030 Olympics on an ever-warming planet.

The IOC has reportedly been talking to representatives from Salt Lake City, Vancouver, and Sapporo, Japan, and many believe that one of those cities will be invited to host the 2030 Games. However, now the committee’s executive board is raising several questions about climate change.

The Washington Post reported that the IOC had a long conversation that included suggestions that the future Winter Olympics should only be held in places that have average February temperatures of 32 degrees, along with the possibility of routine Winter Games among a small pool of places to guarantee that it is cold enough. They decided that they need to study their options before making a final decision.

“We have preliminary results of leading academic research on the impact of climate change, which shows a potential reduction in a number of climate reliable hosts in the future,” IOC executive director Christophe Dubi said Tuesday.
