Eleven thousand scientists have signed to a new study to state that “clearly and unequivocally that planet Earth is facing a climate emergency.” How can humans help? Two ways, having less kids and eating a plant-based diet.

Lead author William Ripple told Business Insider “The greatest influence individuals can have in combating climate change is to have one fewer child.”  According to the study, the largest sources of increases in CO2 emissions are economic and population growth. The earth’s population increases by 80 million people annually, or 200,000 each day.

Reducing the growth, while ensuring “social integrity,” would reduce both emissions and biodiversity loss. Programs like increased availability of family planning services, and full gender equity would assist in stabilizing and beginning to reduce global population. Young Canadian activists have already pledged to not have kids until the government takes climate change seriously.

Under the “Food,” section of the study, the authors are clear about the benefits of a plant-based diet for both humans and the environment. The study reads, “Eating mostly plant-based foods while reducing the global consumption of animal products, especially ruminant livestock, can improve human health and significantly lower GHG emissions. Moreover, this will free up croplands for growing much-needed human plant food instead of livestock feed, while releasing some grazing land to support natural climate solutions.”

Time to jump on the plant-based diet train. Plant-based diets have been linked to numerous environmental and health benefits, including reduced cancer risk and heart disease.
