Unfortunately, the world is not a very peaceful or safe place for many individuals. From conflict to abuse to exploitation, there is so much cruelty inflicted on both humans and animals. While this can get disheartening and difficult to hear about, petitions are a great way to use your voice for good. Just by signing one, you are a part of helping those who are not treated fairly. You can even share them with your friends and acquaintances to increase your impact.
Through petitions, we can reach those in power and demand justice for others. They are valuable tools for making positive changes in the world. If you are looking for a way to help animals and humans, here are 10 petitions you should sign this week, including Send Lab Chimps to a Sanctuary, Protect Saguaro National Park, and Pass a New Cover Relief Stimulus Package!
We want to thank you for being the change you wish to see in the world and giving a voice to the voiceless.
1. Send Lab Chimps to a Sanctuary
When she was only one year old, Montessa the chimpanzee was stolen from the wild and sold to a U.S. government laboratory specializing in experimental research. She has been there for 45 years. Five years ago, the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH) decided to cease its biomedical experiments on these animals and allow them to live out their days in peace at a sanctuary in Louisiana. However, Montessa and 38 of her fellow lab chimpanzees were deemed “too frail” to move to the sanctuary. Other chimps were also euthanized even though many medical experts argue that some of those animals might very well have healed and recovered. Activists, organizations, and members of Congress are trying to fight back against this decision that NIH is refusing to reconsider. Sign this petition to demand that the U.S. government finally send these abused, traumatized lab chimps to a reputable sanctuary!
2. Tell Trump to Work With Congress to Pass a Stimulus Measure
More than 80 current officers are in California police departments and have serious convictions, including DUIs, animal cruelty, and even manslaughter. Other states have agencies with the power to decertify cops that have committed crimes such as these. California does not. Instead, individual departments, meaning the cops’ friends and colleagues make the decision to hold them accountable or not. Especially in cases of police brutality, it’s obvious that holding cops accountable is already an issue that needs to be addressed. Cops who break the law and put others in danger should not be allowed to serve. It’s time California pass a law barring convicted police officers from serving and create an agency with the power to decertify them. Sign this petition to tell California to protect its residents and get these cops off our streets
3. Bar People Who Buried Their Dog Alive From Ever Owning Animals Again

Olga was driving along a highway in Russia when she spotted the figure walking through the rain. She kept driving, but couldn’t put it out of her head, so she turned around and found an exhausted dog named Kiryusha. She put the pup into the back of her car and drove him to a rescue who put out pictures of the pup in case he was lost. A few people recognized the dog and pointed the rescue to the owners. They then found out the awful circumstances that led Kiryusha to the state that Olga found him in. Kiryusha’s owners injected the pup with a drug to kill him and then buried him in a grave, but the dog wasn’t even dead. After waking up, he dug himself up and walked to find help. The owners claimed that Kiryusha was “unhealthy” – a claim totally negated by those who cared for him at the shelter, who said he had no serious medical problems. Sign this petition and demand that Kiryusha’s owners be charged with animal cruelty, and that they be barred from ever owning an animal again.
4. Wait Until Vaccine is Thoroughly Tested Before Releasing it to the Public

With over 215,000 lives lost and counting, the United States has the highest COVID-related death rate of any other economically comparable country. Trump has been responsible for everything from spreading misinformation about coronavirus to downplaying the severity of the virus for 7 months. Now he’s trying to say that the vaccine will be ready around election time, which is immediately disqualifies whatever vaccine he is talking about as safe. To be deemed safe, a vaccine must be put through one stage of laboratory testing and then three phases of clinical testing in people. Thus, a more realistic date would be around spring of 2021. Sign this petition and demand that the FDA, who will have to approve of any vaccine that is given to the public, not listen to Trump’s demands to abandon science and safety. This vaccine must be on scientists’ timelines, not on Trump’s!
5. Bar Cops Who Illegally Killed Animals from Owning Guns or Becoming Officers Again

Night hunting is the horrific practice of sneaking up on a slumbering, unsuspecting bird or animal. And then shooting it dead, in cold blood. Addison Cox and Michael Rolerson, police officers in Rockland, Maine, were found illegally murdering birds and wildlife in this way. After beating a porcupine with their batons to death, the two were fired and charged with committing both felony and misdemeanor animal cruelty offenses. But that will not stop these two violent criminals from becoming cops or even security officers elsewhere. They can also still legally purchase more guns in the future. Sign this petition to demand that the District Attorney of Maine, Natasha Irving, call for these two dangerous men to be barred from future service as police officers, as well as from owning guns!
6. Protect Saguaro National Park
Saguaro National Park’s large forests of saguaro cacti are home to javelina, coyote, quail, and desert tortoise. The park also includes 190 miles of trails beloved by locals and visitors from around the world. However, because Tuscon, the neighboring city, is rapidly growing and expanding, the remaining Sonoran Desert land around the park is continually threatened by development. Fortunately, H.R. 7098 – the Saguaro National Park Boundary Expansion and Study Act of 2020 would secure 1,150 additional acres for the park to protect and preserve the land. This would also help provide increased public access and improve outdoor recreation opportunities. Sign this petition to urge your Representative to pass H.R. 7098 to protect areas adjacent to Saguaro National Park from incompatible development today!
7. Give People in US Territories the Right to Vote
People in the U.S. territories, Puerto Rico, Guam, the U.S. Virgin Islands, the Northern Mariana Islands, and American Samoa, are eligible to serve in the military and have been drafted in the past; pay payroll, business, estate, and social security taxes; and contribute to Medicare and Medicaid. They fulfill all of the responsibilities of a citizen, contributing to every facet of your country’s infrastructure. However, they are not allowed to vote in its most important elections. Racist gerrymandering and voter suppression have been tools of the ‘democratic’ process in the U.S. since elections became something in which more people than just white men were allowed to vote. Sign this petition to demand that the people of Puerto Rico, Guam, the U.S. Virgin Islands, the Northern Mariana Islands, and American Samoa are given the voting rights they deserve!
8. Rescind NOAA Appointment of Climate Change Denier
According to their website, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association (NOAA)’s mission is this: “To understand and predict changes in climate, weather, oceans, and coasts, to share that knowledge and information with others, and to conserve and manage coastal and marine ecosystems and resources.” This mission seems to suggest a concern with climate change. However, the Trump administration has hired David Legates, a climate change denying scientist, to be the agency’s deputy assistant secretary of commerce for observation and prediction. He has written that the Sun, rather than human activity, has been warming the planet. A paper that he helped write about climate change denial was also funded by fossil fuel giants and lobbying groups that benefit greatly from uncurbed emissions. Sign this petition and ask that the agency rescind Legates’ appointment, and that they fill that position with a suitable replacement that actually follows science!
9. Wait Until All Votes are Counted Before Calling Winner of Election
The idea of an ‘election night’ winner is actually a myth born out of news outlets’ need to sensationalize and compete for audience members. In-person voting occurs on Election Day, but in many states, mail-in ballots can be received for days after, and this has already been true for years. This is especially important considering that there will likely be an unprecedented amount of mail-in ballots due to COVID-19. By U.S. law, on December 14, after all ballots are counted, the electors that make up the electoral college cast their respective votes for the presidential election. These electoral votes are not even formally counted until January 6 in front of Congress, which is followed two weeks later by the president’s inauguration. Media outlets need to make this widely known and wait until all votes are counted before calling a winner. We cannot jump to conclusions or just assume the results. Sign this petition asking that the major news outlets, including Fox, NBC, CBS, CNN, and ABC, vow to uphold the TRUE results of this presidential election by not calling the winner early!
10. Charge Roadside Zoo Owner for “Disappearance” of 23 Exotic Animals
Source: WLKY News Louisville/Youtube
Roadside zoos are terrible attractions where wild animals are kept in metal cages and abused for human entertainment. One such horrible roadside zoo was the deceptively-named “Wildlife in Need” facility for tigers in Charlestown, Indiana. Its owner, Tim Stark, became a household name after the Netflix show Tiger King exposed the strange and corrupt world of big cat ownership in the U.S. Stark’s zoo had over 180 wild animals and evidence suggests that he failed to provide vital medications to his animal; kept some of them in tiny, unventilated trailers for extended periods of time; and murdered animals. In February 2020, the USDA revoked Stark’s license to operate the facility, but when they arrived to remove and rehouse his animals in September, Stark and 23 of his animals were missing. He was finally found, but his animals are still missing and many worry that he killed them. Sign this petition to demand that Indiana officials charge Tim Stark for the “disappearance” of 23 exotic wild animals and continue to investigate until they uncover the truth!
