Saudi Arabia’s Prince revealed a plan to build The Line, a linear 100-mile-long city that will be emission-free and completely run on renewable energy, The Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman revealed the plan in 2021 and said it would be constructed vertically, with no roads or cars. Now the Saudi government has released images of what The Line could look like once complete.

The city was designed to be just 200 meters (656 feet) wide and 500 meters (1,640 feet) tall, and 170 kilometers (105 miles) long. There will be multiple housing communities in a glass facade along the coast that will eventually be able to host 9 million residents.

The Prince said in a statement, “The designs revealed today for the city’s vertically layered communities will challenge the traditional flat, horizontal cities and create a model for nature preservation and enhanced human livability. THE LINE will tackle the challenges facing humanity in urban life today and will shine a light on alternative ways to live.”

The Line was designed in a way that residents can walk five minutes to facilities and organically meet others as they go about their daily lives. There will be a high-speed rail for transfer that will take 20 minutes from end to end. The utopia will also be climate controlled through a natural ventilation system.

The Line is a part of the $500 billion mega-city project that is being constructed in the Tabuk Province. However, there has been controversy surrounding the project, particularly because around 20,000 people will be forced to relocate. These residents belong to the Huwaitat indigenous tribe, who trace their lineage back to before Saudi was even found.

Al Jazeera reported that a Huwaitat activist was arrested and imprisoned in 2020 due to the tribe’s refusal to relocate. According to another activist, in 2021, at least 15 other tribe members were abducted and imprisoned. Two of them were reportedly taken in after they spoke out in opposition to the project on social media.

Although this emission-free utopia could be a great thing, it should not be built on stolen land.
