Climate-related disasters are on the rise. States on the coast of Gulf Mexico have experienced an earlier hurricane season and it’s predicted that they will experience stronger and more frequent hurricanes. On the west coast, fires have burned hundreds of thousands of acres, forcing people out of their homes and animals out of their habitats. The fires have also made air quality worse, which is especially worrisome during the pandemic. The fires have also caused dangerous chemicals to get into drinking water. The apocalyptic-looking skies are a testament to how bad these fires an ominous visual manifestation of our future if nothing is done to protect this planet.

While these disasters are intense and threaten many lives, things are only going to get worse as climate change does. It’s important to do our part to curb climate change with individual actions such as eliminating meat from your diet, reducing your waste, and making other sustainable swaps. By supporting sustainable companies (and not supporting companies that wreak havoc on the environment), we show them that protecting our planet is important to us. However, it’s also important to pair these individual actions with larger scales ones. We must urge our elected officials to force companies to act in a way that does not harm the planet. We can do this by urging them to support the Green New Deal.

The Green New Deal would transition our economy from one that is dependent on fossil fuels to one that depends on renewable energy as well as focuses on resource efficiency and conservation. This would not only save our planet, our homes, and our health, but it would also create sustainable jobs for years to come.

Sign this petition to demand that U.S. legislators come together to unanimously support a Green New Deal so that we can finally address the climate crisis.
