For many decades, conservationists have wanted more funding for national public lands. Finally, with The Great American Outdoors Act, which the Senate will vote on next Tuesday, this may happen. About 200 House members have said they will Support it and if the Senate approves it, Trump says he will sign it. Therefore, we need to apply some pressure and make sure the Senate knows how much Americans care about this.
The Land and Water Conservation Act requires Congress to provide $900 million a year for land acquisition and other spending, but that has not happened. National Park Service officials have estimated that $20 billion is actually necessary due to the deferment in funds.
As explained by The Denver Post, the historic Conservation bill: “combines two previous bills that each had strong majority bipartisan Support. One part would provide full and permanent funding of $900 million each year, the amount the fund is authorized to receive, from offshore oil and gas revenues – not tax dollars. The other aims for parks restoration by investing $1.9 billion annually for the next five years to maintain land managed by the National Park Service, Forest Service, Fish and Wildlife Service, Bureau of Indian Education and Bureau of Land Management.”
If passed, which it currently is expected to, the Great American Outdoors Act “would provide permanent, full, and dedicated funding for the LWCF. This means the LWCF would receive, indefinitely, the full $900 million needed annually to fund the program. It also means funding can’t be diverted.”
Although the Senate is expected to pass it, you can increase the chances and reduce the risk by making your voice heard. You can contact your senator by calling the U.S. Capitol Switchboard at (202) 224-3121. A switchboard operator will connect you directly with the Senate office you request.
