Plastic pollution is one of the huge issues that we are facing today. Chemicals and small particles from plastic are ending up everywhere – in the ocean, soil, placentas, animal stomachs, and human organs. Plastic is killing our planet as well as those who live on it, and we need to fight back against plastic pollution. Many people have started doing this in their own lives by opting for reusable alternatives to single-use plastic and being more mindful of the waste they create. While this is amazing, the problem won’t be solved until corporations are held accountable.
A recent study found that just 20 companies are responsible for 55% of the plastic waste in the entire world. These companies are headquartered in different countries around the world, with ExxonMobil of the US being the absolute worst. A few of the other companies include Dow, Sinopec, and Indorama Ventures. The report also highlighted investors and banks that finance the plastic producers including, Barclays, JPMorgan Chase, Citigroup, and Bank of America.
The problem is even worse than one might imagine. While many people view fossil fuels and plastic pollution as two separate issues, they are inherently intertwined. Because most plastic is made of oil and gas, all of these firms produce fossil fuels, petrochemicals, or both. Thus, it’s not just plastic waste that’s the issue, but also its creation. Experts estimate that 5-10% of global greenhouse gas emissions will come from plastics within the next 30 years. These companies created the problem, now they need to solve it.
