Johnnie Walker scotch whiskey will be delivered in plastic-free containers starting in 2021, Diageo announced in mid-July. Diageo is the world’s largest spirits company and is focused on reducing plastic waste.
Diageo, which also makes Guinness and Tanqueray Gin, developed the bottle with Pilot Lite, a venture management company. Instead of plastic, the bottle is made from food-grade wood pulp that is 100% recyclable. The cap will be made from aluminum.
The two companies have partnered to make a sustainable packaging company called Pulpex Ltd. which will develop paper bottles, alongside plastic-free product research and development. Pulpex will provide paper bottles to companies like Lipton and PepsiCo, which are expected to launch next year.
Ewan Andrew, the chief sustainability officer at Diageo, said, “We’re proud to have created this world first. We are constantly striving to push the boundaries within sustainable packaging and this bottle has the potential to be truly groundbreaking. It feels fitting that we should launch it with Johnnie Walker, a brand that has often led the way in innovation through its 200-year existence.”
Danish beer company Carlsberg announced a paper bottle in 2019 and other beverage companies like Pepsi have taken steps to reduce plastic in their bottling processes.
