If you ask a little kid what their favorite food is, 9 out of 10 will probably answer “pizza” or “chicken nuggets” perhaps followed by the enthusiastic proclamation of “ice cream!” For the majority of children raised in the U.S., eating meat and dairy products is a given, they’re foods our parents eat and their parents ate and so and so forth. We learn to eat food that is easily available and tastes good and rarely stop to question what sort of impact our food choices have on other people, animals, and the planet. In fact, many of us operate under the assumption that eating meat and dairy is normal, natural, and even necessary … but is this because that is an irrefutable truth or rather the result of our social programming?

In a recent episode of #EatForThePlanet with Nil Zacharias, Dr. Will Tuttle challenges this premise and explains what influences our food choices and further why it is we believe so wholly that we need to consume animal products.


Will is an award-winning speaker and author of The World Peace Diet, he is also a former Zen monk with a Ph.D. from U.C., Berkeley. In this conversation, Will speaks openly and practically about how simply practicing mindfulness can open our minds and hearts to a deeper understanding of how our society shapes us. With this, he illustrates how our food choices create the world around us and posits that an enlightened food system can only happen when individuals adopt an enlightened view of their role our global ecosystem. Every choice we make has a ripple effect on others, but by stopping and questioning the source of our choices, we can all start to create a positive impact rather than negative.
