World leaders at the climate summit signed off on a new climate change agreement after two weeks of debate and discussion.
Though many nations were reluctant to do their part, experts believe that progress could still be made if they hold to their word.
As world leaders gathered to discuss climate concerns behind doors, thousands of activists were outside, reminding them of the urgency. Global warming is only getting worse and will continue to do so if not addressed immediately.
Aminath Shauna, Minister of Environment, Climate change and Technology of the Maldives, said, “For us, this is a matter of survival. Please do us the courtesy to acknowledge that it does not bring hope to our hearts but serves as yet another conversation where we put our homes on the line, while those who have other options decide how quickly they want to act to save those who don’t.”
More than 100 countries signed a pledge to commit to cutting methane emissions by 30% by 2030. However, many nations still aren’t cutting enough emissions in the long run. The pledges aren’t enough to cut back on enough emissions in time, but it is still considered to be good progress.
During the Glasgow summit, nations agreed to speed up their climate planning. They aim to create better and faster plans of action towards reducing Climate change.
One huge loss was that no funds were given to developing countries, leaving these poorer countries to continue to try to get by on their own as they face the brunt of climate change. Richer countries also did not raise adequate funding even though they contribute the most to Pollution.
Phasing out fossil fuels was also held back. Instead, there will only be a “phase down” in order to keep the agreement from falling apart completely. Thus, the fossil fuel industry will continue, but it might downsize a bit.
Overall, the climate summit was filled with ups and downs as some main issues were addressed and decided upon. While others ultimately fell to the wayside.
