In the worst floods in India in 150 years, 3.5 million children have been left in need of clean water. Fifteen children have drowned in flash floods that swept through the country and left millions in need of clean drinking water as the risk of waterborne disease grows, according to UNICEF’s country representative.

A quarter of the South Asian nation was affected by the flash flooding. Many governments and agencies have rushed to provide water and other supplies to the country.
“That’s a staggering number of children and an increase over the last couple of days. Huge areas are fully underwater and are disconnected from safe drinking water and food supplies. Children need help right now,” Sheldon Yett said.
The floods have affected health facilities, shut down schools, and disrupted malnutrition treatment for hundreds of children according to Yett. Cases of diarrhea have risen to 2,700 as of the middle of the week, Yett added.
Authorities in Bangladesh and India are warning of the risk of a disease epidemic. More than 4.5 million people were stranded, and dozens were killed in total in Bangladesh. Experts say floods following seasonal rains are increasing due to Climate change.
