Unfortunately, the world is not a very peaceful or safe place for many individuals. From conflict to abuse to exploitation, there is so much cruelty inflicted on both humans and animals. While this can get disheartening and difficult to hear about, petitions are a great way to use your voice for good. Just by signing one, you are a part of helping those who are not treated fairly. You can even share them with your friends and acquaintances to increase your impact.

Through petitions, we can reach those in power and demand justice for others. They are valuable tools for making positive changes in the world. If you are looking for a way to help animals and humans, here are 10 petitions you should sign this week, including Demand Hazard Pay for Veterinary Workers, Urge Trump Administration Restore NEPA, and Ban the Use of Animals for Entertainment in Russia

1. Demand Hazard Pay for Veterinary Workers

NVA (National Veterinary Associates) is the largest private owner of freestanding veterinary hospitals in the US. Their net worth is hundreds of millions of dollars, but they still aren’t providing veterinary workers with hazard pay during the pandemic. This is completely unjust, especially considering the fact that some in this professional medical field make as little as $12/hour for a job that takes specialized training. Sign this petition to put pressure on NVA to adequately compensate their veterinary staff for the work that they are doing during the pandemic.

2. Ban the Use of Animals for Entertainment in Russia

Noah’s Ark is the name of a traveling zoo in Russia with over 40 different species of animals including lions, bears, panthers, tigers, and wolves. When volunteers walked inside, they encountered animals suffering under the sweltering heat. These animals do not receive proper care or treatment and thus, go through extreme torture. Animals should be in the wild, not cooped up and exploited for human entertainment. There are few protections in Russia that keep bears, elephants, big cats, and others out of circuses and traveling animal exhibit. Sign this petition to end the use of animals in circuses and traveling zoos in Russia.

3. Demand Glasgow End For-Profit Refugee Services!

Asylum seekers in Glasgow need your help. They have escaped awful situations: domestic violence, sexual assault, deadly homophobia, gangs, and wars. By the time they reach the borders of a safe haven country, they have survived unimaginable suffering, including the uncertain and traumatic journeys they must make while fleeing. Ideally, then, by the time they reach a “safe” place to ask for asylum, they should be received with compassion, support, love, and somber respect for all they have been through. However, in Glasgow, they are being packed into unsanitary hostels, given inedible food, and are prevented from talking to the press. Thus, coronavirus is rapidly spreading and some are also becoming malnourished from inadequate care. The cause of these terrible conditions is that the government placed a for-profit corporation, Mears Group, in charge of refugee services. They don’t care about treating people with compassion or humanity as long as they are making money. Sign this petition to demand that Glasgow end its policy of for-profit refugee services! Remind them of their responsibility to provide true humanitarian sanctuary to asylum seekers!

4. Demand St Helen’s Release Goats into Safe Care & Transition to Oat Farming

A recent investigation into Far Marsh Farm, one of the suppliers for St Helen’s goat milk, revealed the horrors of the goat milk industry. After the coverage was reported on, major supermarkets stopped ordering from St Helens and now the owners of the farm have stated that they may have to completely close. Their goats should be placed in sanctuaries and the farm could be converted to a much more sustainable and ethical company. Sign this petition to encourage the owners of the farm, Angus & Kathleen Wielkopolski,  to safely re-home their goats and transition to oat milk or vertical farming!

5. Tell Congress to Reject Trump’s Call to Delay the Election!

Trump, facing slipping polls and COVID surges, has called for the November 3rd election to be delayed. The U.S. election day has remained the same through wars, depressions, and countless other catastrophes. There are already so many issues with voter suppression and disenfranchisement. It is vital that election day still occurs on November 3rd, so we can make a changes in how this country is run. Sign this petition to tell Congress to reject any attempt to delay the November 3rd election.

6. End “Sport” Where Hunters Pay $2,000 To Shoot Terrified Pigs From Helicopters

In Texas, people can pay upwards of $2000 to ride in a helicopter and shoot a scared herd of pigs. The “sport” lasts for two hours and hunters get unlimited ammunition. Most of the participants murder about two dozen hogs, but some have killed up to 50 during their ride. This is such a cruel way to be “entertained.” Sign this petition to ask Texas lawmakers to end the practice of massacring pigs for “fun!”

7.  Protect Arctic Waters!

The Arctic Rule is designed to ensure that if companies ever attempt to explore for oil and gas in Arctic waters again, they will adhere to procedures designed to maximize safety and minimize risk. Unfortunately, the Trump administration wants to roll-back those protections. Rollbacks would be extremely harmful and increas the odds of a catastrophic oil spill in U.S. Arctic waters. Sign this petition to urge the U.S. government to protect the Arctic!

8. Demand Trump Administration Restore NEPA

Since 1970, the National Environmental Protection Act, commonly known as NEPA, has kept the federal government in check when building. Predictably, the sites chosen for these projects are almost always close to communities of color. Under the new, stripped-down law, a project’s contribution to climate change does not even need to be considered. And the new procedures and requirements make it nearly impossible for people who live nearby to have any say at all in what is built! This is a terrible change to make, as it will severely harm the environment and the communities near new constructions. Sign this petition to demand that the Trump Administration restore NEPA to the way it was meant to be — protecting people and the environment!

9. Ban Cruel Method of Euthanizing Farm Animals

In Iowa, Direct Action Everywhere got footage of a large pork producer, Iowa Select Farms, shutting down the ventilation in a barn to euthanize thousands of pigs. The farm essentially roasted these poor animals alive. With COVID causing many issues in the livestock industry, this terrible practice could happen again! Sign this petition to ask Bernie Sanders to lead a movement in Congress that would ban this method of euthanization once and for all.

10. Urge Sri Lanka to Pass New, Enforceable Laws for Murdering Elephants.

In 2019, Kanakota the elephant collapsed and died of exhaustion in the streets of Sri Lanka after being forced to endure group after group of tourists strapped to his back. Unfortunately, Kanakota’s fate is not rare. In 2019, 361 elephants were killed in Sri Lanka. The deaths are not accidental. Almost 85% of the 361 deaths can be attributed to humans. Elephants have been killed by electric fences, explosives, and poison. Killing these magnificent animals is illegal, but the government has failed to enforce this law consistently. Part of the problem is that, technically, the penalty for killing an elephant is death. This is unenforceable, cruel, and outdated. Sign this petition to urge Sri Lanka’s government to pass new, fairer, and enforceable punishments for murdering elephants.
