California air regulators will issue a ban on the sale of new gasoline-powered cars by 2035, as well as set interim targets to phase the cars out. When the California Air Resources Board measure passes, it will be the first of such bans in the world. Board member Daniel Sperling told CNN that this is a monumental moment.
“This is the most important thing that CARB has done in the last 30 years. It’s important not just for California, but it’s important for the country and the world,” Sperling said.

The new rules will also set quotas for new zero-emission vehicles. Beginning in 2026, 35 percent of new cars, SUVs, and small pickups that are sold in California will be required to be zero-emission vehicles. This percent will increase each year, with 51 percent of all new car sales in 2028, 68 percent in 2030, until finally reaching 100 percent in 2035. The quotas allow for 20 percent of zero-emission cars that are sold to be plug-in hybrids.
Luckily, it seems that most people have been for this, and there has been “surprisingly little debate,” Sperling told CNN. Car companies all over the world are beginning to announce plans to help move toward zero-emission cars, trucks, and SUVs.
Earlier this year, the Biden administration reinstated California’s ability to set its own vehicle emission standards, which has paved the way for these new regulations. When Trump was in office, his administration took away California’s right to set its own rules around carbon pollution for the millions of cars in the state. Biden’s reversal was a great step for the environment and will hopefully resonate with other states and set a new tone in the transportation sector.
The country is finally moving away from fossil fuels and towards renewable energy! President Biden has also voiced climate goals, including establishing 500,000 electric vehicle charging stations and increasing electric car sales by 2030. Biden’s bipartisan infrastructure bill also included $5 billion to go towards states to develop their electric charging stations. Sign this petition to help California phase out gas cars.
