Unfortunately, the world is not a very peaceful or safe place for many individuals. From conflict to abuse to exploitation, there is so much cruelty inflicted on both humans and animals. While this can get disheartening and difficult to hear about, petitions are a great way to use your voice for good. Just by signing one, you are a part of helping those who are not treated fairly. You can even share them with your friends and acquaintances to increase your impact.
Through petitions, we can reach those in power and demand justice for others. They are valuable tools for making positive changes in the world. If you are looking for a way to help animals and humans, here are 10 petitions you should sign this week, including Ban Live Animal Exports in the EU, Make Period Products Free in the UK, and Close Abusive Pig Farm!
We want to thank you for being the change you wish to see in the world and giving a voice to the voiceless.
1. Find the Person Who Flung this Cat From Their Window

A few weeks ago, someone decided to throw a sweet cat, who has now been named “Honey,” from their moving car. The person threw Honey into ice-cold water, which would have killed her had a dogwalker not witnessed the whole incident. He saved the sweet cat and another woman took Honey to the vet. Honey was emaciated, covered in wounds and fleas, and had matted fur. Fortunately, despite this trauma, she is recovering. The person who did this must be found before they harm another animal or human being. Sign this petition urging the South Yorkshire Police to aid in the search for the vehicle from which Honey was thrown

2. Stop Executions in Egypt
Source: TRT World/Youtube
During the months of October and November this year, state officials in Egypt have hanged 57 people, which is more than double the number from the entire preceding year. Amnesty International is calling it an “execution spree.” Many of the prisoners who have been put to death are just citizens who have dared to voice their own opinions. Activists and civil rights lawyers have been jailed for this reason before. The largest sector attracting foreign investment in Egypt is its oil and gas industry. Chief among these is BP, which invests an additional $1 billion each year in the country, constituting approximately 40% of Egypt’s oil and gas production. Sign this petition to demand that major foreign investors, including BP, pressure the Egyptian government to halt these executions!

3. Ban Live Animal Exports Throughout the European Union
Source: ABE Media UK/Youtube
In December 2020, England and Wales banned the export of live animals for slaughter abroad. In live animal exports, animals are confined to extremely small metal cages in vessels with poor ventilation that reach extreme temperatures. While in transport for a few days to a few weeks, disease spreads among these animals and they often are left without clean food and water. This live animal export ban is a huge step in animal welfare. The European Union has been considering similar legislation for years, but has yet to actually implement any such ban. Sign this petition to demand that the European Union (EU) step up and pass a similar ban on live animal exports now!

4. Demand World Leaders Help Refugees and Displaced People

Every two seconds, every single day, all year long, a person is forced to flee their home. Children lose their childhoods, families lose their homes, and people lose their loved ones. Governments need to not only help refugees and give them a safe place to live, but they also need to address the root cause of displacement. Refugees are not just a number. Refugees are human lives. Sign this petition to demand world leaders take joint responsibility for protecting people seeking refuge.

As the holidays approach, it’s tempting to want to engage in classic holiday traditions, which usually revolve around being with friends and family. However, we are still in a pandemic that has caused over one million people to die and tens of millions more to become ill. Being together this holiday season will open up the door for more transmission, more sickness, and ultimately more death. Hospitals are overwhelmed and we need to do what we can to slow the spread of the virus. Sign this pledge that you are staying home this holiday season to save countless lives!

6. Don’t Let Man Who Kidnapped and Murdered His Fiancé’s Dogs Ever Care for Animals Again
Warning: Hard to read if you love animals. After an argument with his fiancee, William Petty took 2 of her dogs to the woods and shot them. He tried to make a 16-year-old shoot one. He's in jail now on felony animal cruelty, child abuse & other charges. https://t.co/CrHpXQfM8y pic.twitter.com/IXSlfBP4aO

Every couple has disagreements. Usually, this leads to taking a walk or talking to someone until the conflict can be resolved. However, recently, William Petty of Volusia County, Florida took a much more violent route. After a fight with his fiancé, he kidnapped her two dogs, drove them out to the woods, and shot and killed them. He also brought a teenager who was with them and tried to force him to shoot the dog. The teen bravely refused and shot at the ground to delay what Petty eventually did himself. We need to make sure his sentencing includes a solution to keep animals and people safe. Sign this petition to demand that William Petty never be allowed to own, care for, or have involved connections with domestic animals ever again, and that he receives evaluation and help before he harms anyone else.

7. Investigate Florida Governor Ron DeSantis for Abuse of Power
Source: MSNBC/Youtube
At the beginning of the pandemic, scientist, Rebekah Jones, refused to change data that would make COVID-19 not look as bad in Florida. Subsequently, Jones was fired, but she made sure to tell others what happened and spread the truth about what was really going on in Florida. As a result, on December 7, 2020, armed agents arrived at Jones’ home – putting guns in her face, and even pointing guns at her children. We cannot allow Ron DeSantis to get away with trying to cover0up what’s really going on with the pandemic by threatening a scientist who was spreading the alarm about public health. Sign this petition today and call on the Office of the Chief Inspector General to open an immediate investigation into this gross abuse of power!

8. Make Period Products Free Throughout the UK
Source: BBC News/Youtube
The lack of access to period products is a huge issue in most countries. There’s no reason why something that is so essential should be inaccessible for some. Fortunately, Scotland recently decided to eliminate the economic and accessibility inequality among people who bleed by making period products free to those who need them. Sign this petition to demand that England and Wales join Scotland in making period products free for all who need them, so the entire UK can be a period-friendly nation!

9. Don’t Let Man Who Beat His Dog Have Another Dog Ever Again

Recently, a video was taken by someone’s doorbell surveillance that showed a man abusing his poor dog. After exiting the car, he begins to whip the dog with his leash, shove him against a fence and beat the dog more, while kneeling on him. This is not dog training, it’s violent animal abuse. The culprit has been identified and the dog, taken into custody. Sign this petition to make sure local authorities do not give him the dog back and prevent him from ever owning one again!

10. Shut Down Herta Facilities Where Pigs are so Abused and Neglected that They Have Resorted to Cannibalism

French brand Herta, a Nestlé-owned company known for its pork products, has just been caught massively abusing the animals in its facilities. Undercover footage by L214, a group of French Animal rights activists, shows a hungry pig standing over a dead pig and eating their stomach. It also shows the staff physically abusing the animals with electrical prods. This is all addition to the terrible conditions: narrow crates without straw, daylight, or bedding – just metal bars. Not only is this inhumane, but also some of their practices, such as tail docking and using an antibiotic known as colistin, is illegal. Sign this petition to demand that the French minister of agriculture, Didier Guillaume, shut down this horrific operation now!
