Ginger the dog was believed to be stolen from her family and went missing for half a decade. She originally disappeared in 2017,  leaving her human, Barney Lattimore, absolutely devastated. For most animal companion caretakers, it is difficult to imagine losing a beloved for so long. However, Barney, from Janesville, Wisconsin, refused to give up hope and continued to search for Ginger everywhere he went, and his dedication paid off.

Months into his search, in early May, the City of Beloit Police Department posted a picture on Facebook of a stray dog they found 13 miles from the home Ginger disappeared from five years ago. Lattimore saw this post, which the police department shared in hopes of finding her owner, and could not believe what he saw. Lattimore took one look at the picture and immediately knew it was his Ginger.

When Lattimore arrived at the Humane Society of Southern Wisconsin, the two had an immediate reunion that was emotional to watch.

“When he arrived, staff led Barney to the back of the shelter to make sure it was her. As soon as they saw each other, there was no doubt. The excitement on the family’s faces, as well as Ginger’s, when they were finally reunited, was beyond memorable,” HSSW shared on Facebook.

“Ginger is back with her true family and now has the opportunity to meet her new ‘pack’ members and make up for lost time!” the shelter added.
