Local police are investigating allegations that a van driver ran over three ducklings after other cars stopped to let the family cross the road.
A local man, Steven Walley, posted on Facebook about the incident that occurred on the A34 in Trentham and said that a family of seven ducklings was trying to cross the road.
“All the traffic stopped to let them cross but disgustingly this van driver, after initially stopping, could not then wait for the five seconds it would have taken to let them cross and drove straight over them, crushing three of them.”
Walley said in his post that he followed the van and had a ‘very heated conversation’ with the driver.
The picture of the van and license plate were widely circulating, and the Staffordshire police are asking the public not to engage in vigilante action.
In a statement, the police said, “We understand this is an emotive issue for many people and we ask please that you do not take matters into your own hands.”
In a statement, the RSPCA said, “We understand police are looking into this shocking incident. We’d urge anyone who has first-hand information about this to contact local police on 101 or our cruelty line on 0300 1234 999.”
It’s shocking to know that someone could be so cruel to run over these innocent animals just trying to cross the street. If you see an animal in the road and can safely stop, always do that! Wildlife crossings are becoming more prevalent, and more are being made, but it’s not possible to put them everywhere. These roads have been built in the animals’ habitat, and we have no right to intentionally disregard their presence.
